Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket: The Layering Legend
The Patagonia Nano Puff is the layering piece that everyone owns for a reason. Synthetic insulation that performs when wet, packs down to nothing, and looks good enough for town.

Minnesota winters demand layers that work. The Nano Puff has been my midlayer of choice for two seasons now, and it's earned permanent residence in my pack.
60g PrimaLoft Gold Eco insulation is the key. Unlike down, it keeps insulating when damp — critical for high-output activities where you're generating sweat. I've worn this ice fishing at -10°F (under a shell) and hiking at 35°F (as my only layer). Both worked.
Packability is outstanding. Stuffs into its own chest pocket, about the size of a Nalgene bottle. I keep one in my car at all times from October to April.
Wind resistance is good for a midlayer. It'll handle moderate wind on its own, but in a serious Minnesota winter blow, you need a shell over it.
The DWR finish sheds light rain and snow. Not a rain jacket, but it buys you time in a surprise shower.
Fit: I'm 5'11", 180 lbs, and the medium is perfect as a midlayer. Size up if you want it as an outer layer.
