X Ultra 4 GTX

Salomon nailed the sweet spot between trail runner agility and hiking boot support. The X Ultra 4 GTX is my go-to for day hikes and light overnight trips.

I've put about 200 miles on the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX across Minnesota's Superior Hiking Trail sections and local state parks. These boots broke in within the first 5 miles — almost zero adjustment period.

The Advanced Chassis between the outsole and midsole gives you this locked-in stability on rocky terrain without the stiffness of a traditional boot. It's like having ankle support that doesn't restrict your natural movement.

GORE-TEX waterproofing is legit. Crossed streams, hiked in rain, trudged through morning dew — feet stayed dry every time. Breathability is decent for a waterproof boot, though you'll get sweaty on hot summer days.

Grip is outstanding. The Contagrip MA outsole eats up wet rocks and muddy trails. I've had zero slips on terrain that would have sent me skating in other boots.

Only complaint: they run a half size small. Order up.
