REI Co-op Half Dome SL 2+ Review: The Best Budget Backpacking Tent?
The REI Half Dome SL 2+ punches way above its weight class. At under $300, you get a freestanding tent with real headroom, solid weather protection, and a trail weight that won't destroy your knees.

I've spent 14 nights in the REI Half Dome SL 2+ across three seasons in Minnesota, from muggy August nights at Boundary Waters to a windy October weekend at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.
Setup is dead simple — color-coded clips, two hubbed poles, and you're shelter-ready in about 5 minutes. The vestibule gives you enough room to stash boots and a pack without playing Tetris.
The mesh inner tent is a dream in summer — full ventilation, no condensation buildup. In colder weather, the full-coverage fly does its job. I saw rain for 8 straight hours on one trip and woke up bone dry.
Where it falls short: it's not ultralight. At 4 lbs 5 oz trail weight, thru-hikers will look elsewhere. But for weekend warriors and car campers who want reliability without dropping $500+? This is the tent.
What We Like
- Excellent price-to-quality ratio
- Easy 5-minute setup
- Solid rain protection
- Roomy for a 2-person tent
- Freestanding design
What Could Be Better
- Not ultralight at 4 lbs 5 oz
- Vestibule could be bigger
- Zippers feel a bit cheap
The Verdict
Best value backpacking tent under $300. Period. If you're not counting every ounce, buy this.
